O Bild von meinem Knaben,	Oh picture of my boy,
Du bist nicht ganz getroffen,	you are not exactly right,
Und doch so sprechend ähnlich.	and yet so convincingly similar.
Will das sich widersprechen?	Is that a contradiction?
Ich weiß es auszugleichen,	I know how to reconcile
Und löse so das Räthsel.	and solve so a riddle.

Als ich in meiner Burg hielt,	When I held was held up in my castle,
Das heißt in meinem Hause,	that is, in my home,

Ein dunkles Licht zu mahlen.	in order to paint a dark light.

Ich ließ in diesem Kampfe	I let in this battle
Den Bildner und das Urbild,	the model and the archetype,
Und schrieb an meinem Stehpult	and wrote on my lectern

Doch konnt' ich viel nicht schreiben,	But I couldn't write a lot,

Der Mahler traf die Züge,	The painter held the way,
Die Mienen, die belebten,	that mine, the loved,
Die hielt er fest; die Worte,	that he held on to; the word,
Die sie belebten aber,	that they enlivened, but,
Ließ er dabei verfliegen;	there he let disperse;
Womit konnt' er sie halten?	with what could he contain it?
Ich aber hab' im Ohre,	I but have in my ear,
Dem lauschenden, behalten	the overheard, remember
Den süßen Schwarm von Bienen,	the sweet swarm of bees,
Der dieser Rosenknospe	of the rosebud
Des Mundes honigduftend	from the mouth honey-scented
Entquoll, vom Athem trunken.	pouring out, drunk from breath.
Und seh' ich nun das Bild an,	And I look now at the picture,
So hängen sich die Trauben	so cling the swarm
Von Bienen an die Rose,	of bees to the rose,
Und summen ins Gemüth mir	and humming in my heart
Schwermüth'ge Schwärmereyen,	melancholy passion,
Ansprechend mit dem Nachklang	corresponding with the echo
Der nun versiegten Quelle	of the dried-out spring
Des kindlichen Geschwätzes,	of the childish chitter-chatter,
Ansprechend die Erinnrung	so charming in my memory
Im tiefsten Grund der Seele,	in the deepest ground of my soul,
Um ew'ge Lieb' und Trauer	to an eternal love and sadness
Und Freud' am schönen Bildniß.	and delight in this beautiful portrait.
So wird das Bild nun freilich,	In this way the picture now,
Als wie zu mir, zu keinem	as it is to me, not able
Beschauer sprechen können,	to the viewer to speak,
