Wehrlose Unschuld, nicht zum Kampf gerüstet mit dem Tod; Defenceless naivety, not equipped to struggle with death;
Daß dich der dunkle Feind ansticht, womit hast du’s verdient? That the dark enemy stung you, what did you do to deserve it?
Es schaukelt unbefangen dich in Frühlingsluft der Zweig; It shakes you freely on the branch in the spring air;
Des Wintersturmes Zorngewicht, womit hast du’s verdient? Angry weight of the winter gales, what did you do to deserve it?
Und wenn der Zweig, weil er zu kühn und stolz die Krone trug, And if the branch, because it carries the crown too bravely and proudly,
Verdient hat dieses Strafgericht; womit hast du’s verdient? has deserved this judgement, what have you done to deserve it?
O armer Zweig, die Lust ist hin, die du nicht würdig trugst, Oh poor branch, the joy is gone, you weren’t worthy of it,
