Von Freuden floß um mich vorzeiten Joy flowed around me for a long time
Von Freuden floß um mich vorzeiten Joy flowed around me for a long time,
Ein Überfluß; in abundance;
Und wie ich schöpfte, blieb beizeiten Though I ladled it up, it stayed
Ein Überschuß. in surplus.
Wie dacht’ ich, daß versiegen könnte   How, thought I, could this exuberance
Der Überschwang? ever dry up?
Ergossen war nach allen Weiten All the overflow had burst out
Der Überguß. into the distance.
Wohin verlaufen hat das Wasser   Where did the water run out to
Sich über Nacht? in the night?
Es eilt wohl, um mir zu bereiten It hurried quickly, to leave me without
Nicht Überdruß! preparation!
Vorüber eilt des Glückes Fülle,   The happy abundance has run off,
Und rauscht von fern and roars in the distance
Mir einen noch, und keinen zweiten only once, with no second
Vorübergruß. greeting.
Ihr Augen, wollt Ersatz ihr weinen?   Her eyes. Do you want want to replace their weeping?
So weinet nur! Then cry!
Und mich durchs Leben soll begleiten Through life I will keep the company of
Ein trüber Fluß. a murky river.
Wo ich am Strom der Wehmuth lausche   Where I can listen to the stream of sorrow
Im Hauch der Nacht, on the breath of the night,
Weht her von jenseit goldner Saiten golden strings fluttering from the opposite side
Herübergruß. in greeting.
Am Ufer pflanz’ ich dunkle Lieder,   On the riverbank I plant dark songs,
Ihr Duft weht hin, Their scent wafts out
Bis ich geflügelt selber schreiten until I, with wings, myself
Hinüber muß. must proceed across.
