Ein Mann waldeinwärts machte	A man into the woods made
Den Weg, da saß im Abendstral	his way, there sat in the sun's rays
Ein Kinderpaar und lachte.	a pair of laughing children.

Das lachende Paar ihn Wunder nahm,	The laughing pair gave him wonder,
Doch ging er den Weg hernieder,	but he went deeper along the path,
Und als hinaus vor den Wald er kam,	and when he came back out of the woods,
Da saß das Pärchen wieder.	there sat the pair again.

Mit Staunen hat er hier wie dort	With astonishment he here as there
Das lachende Paar gefunden;	the laughing pair found;
Noch einmal sieht er hin zum Ort,	but again he looked back to the place,
Da ist das Paar verschwunden.	and the pair has vanished.

Wo ich nun geh durch Wald und Flur,	Where I now go between the woods and the meadow,
Da ist mirs wie ein Mährchen,	it is to me as a fairy tale,
An Ein- und Ausgang seh' ich nur,	on entrance and exit I see only
Ein lächelndes lachendes Pärchen.	a laughing, smiling little pair.

So hab' ich selber nie gelacht,	So have I myself never laughed,
Noch hören und sehen lachen;	nor seen or heard any others laugh;
Sonst hat es das Herz mir froh gemacht,	but it has cheered my heart,
Solls nun mich traurig machen?	does it need to make me sad?

Nein, daß es einst mich froh gemacht,	No, that it one made me happy,
Soll jetzt noch froh mich machen;	should it now make me happy;
Mein Herz in seinem Jammer lacht,	my heart in its sadness laughs,
Seh' ich mein Pärchen lachen.	I see my pair laughing.
