In manchem Lied, gedichtet	In many songs, I wrote
Aus meiner Kinderwelt,	about my child’s life,
Die wie ein Traum vernichtet	it was a dream destroyed,
Jetzt auseinander fällt.	now falling apart.
Und recht als wie zum Hohne,	And right was the scorn,
Da sie zusammenbrach,	that it fell apart.
Kommt an mit Sündenlohne	It came with the wages of sin,
Der neuste Almanach.	the newest almanac,
Das Honorar, das reiche,	the honorarium, the wealth
Das man dem Vater gab,	that was given to the father
Reicht, um der liebsten Leiche	sufficed, for the lovely corpse,
Zu kaufen grad ein Grab.	to purchase a grave.
Und hab’ ich mich versündigt,	And have I sinned,
Daß statt des Herzens Schlag	that instead of the drum of your heart,
Der Harfe Schlag verkündigt,	the harp strums to announce
Was mir am Herzen lag?	what was in my heart?
Nicht hab’ ich mich gerühmet,	I haven’t praised myself
Doch hab’ ich mich gefreut,	but I am glad,
Und mir den Pfad beblümet,	and the path now blooms,
Der mir nun Dornen beut.	which had only offered me thorns.
Die allgemeine Sünde	The various sins
Der Dichtkunst war es nur,	of the craft of poetry were only
