| Meiner Dichtung, und sie meinen; | in my poetry, and their meanings, |
| Herzbedürfnisse zu stillen, | the needs of the heart to quiet: |
| Seh ich immer sie erscheinen. | I always see them appearing. |
| Und so kommt sie nun, zu weinen | And so they come now, to cry |
| Mit mir um zwei theure Schatten; | with me, two dear shadows - |
| Sollten wir’s uns nicht gestatten? | should we not allow ourselves this? |
| Die von mir das Leben hatten, | Those by me which have had life, |
| Haben es zu früh verloren; | have lost it too early. |
| Soll die Mutter ihrem Gatten | Should the mother have born her husband |
| Haben sie umsonst geboren? | a daughter all for nothing? |
| Nein, ich hab’ es mir geschworen, | No, I have sworn it to myself, |
| Euer Leben fort zu dichten, | your lives to fix in poetry, |
| Daß mir nichts es kann vernichten. | so that nothing can destroy them. |
